Hi there! Welcome to my blog. My name is Ivan. I am a Dutch IT Professional working as Principal IT Consultant. Upgrading my MacBook Pro is something I wanted to do for some months. Finally I spend the money and bought all components I wanted to exchange.
The required tools to open my MacBook:
- Phillips screwdriver
- Tri-wing screwdriver
Upgrading my Macbook components in 30 minutes
Samsung SSD EVO 250 GB hard disk, new battery and 8GB of RAM.
I removed the 10 small screws. Pretty easy to do! Just making sure for not losing anything.
First I removed the battery, the memory and as last the hard disk. Process is straight forward without any issue, also easy to do without risk to damage anything.
I installed new components. For the hard disk I needed to remove the original screws as the new SSD disk didn’t have them.
Closed the MacBook with the lower case and started it up.
So far everything went smooth until OS X Recovery needed to start. I spend like 1,5 to 2 hours to load OS X and Internet recovery option didn’t help.
Installation process hang by getting my system frozen. I found a OS X Lion installation DVD and tried from there. At some point my mac froze again and I decided to remove the memory. Whenever you see pc or mac freezes, 99% it relates on bad memory or configuration.
To make long story short, my MacBook didn’t accept 8GB. I installed OS X Lion, upgraded to Mavericks and started to troubleshoot. Original 4GB memory worked fine, I removed and installed new 8GB. MacBook froze, I removed one module from 2GB and installed another 4GB. Booting worked and I could see 6GB was installed. Tried all possible combinations. Bottom line my MacBook mid 2010 only accepted 6GB. I have no clue why 8GB is not being accepted.
This was one week ago and am I so glad I made this investment and upgrade. SSD hard disk is really helping to improve the performance and make the system like new.
I am really considering now to upgrade my iMac 24″ with 500 or 750 GB SSD disk. My advise is if you want to speed up your computer install a SSD hard disk.
