Certification: Microsoft Power Platform Fundamentals PL-900

Originally published Last updated

At the beginning of December, I passed the Azure AZ-900 exam. I had also booked a Microsoft Power Platform Fundamentals Virtual Training Day for 17 December. After attending the session, I wanted to work towards a second fundamentals certification. My background is mainly in IT infrastructure, and I wanted to learn the basics of Power Apps, Power Automate and Power BI so I could automate processes and build simple applications and workflows.

I had already gained experience with Power BI by implementing Power BI Gateway and connecting it to an SAP BW environment. I also set up SQL Server data sources and created dashboards using TOPdesk service management and SolarWinds data. Working with Microsoft support to resolve SSO issues with the Power BI data gateway taught me a lot about Kerberos configuration.

Preparing for the exam

I spent a few days over the holiday season and several evenings at the beginning of the year preparing for the exam. I worked through the official material and created flows, canvas apps and model-driven apps. I booked my exam on 15 January and passed the test. Many questions required me to review the options carefully before choosing the best answer. I was very happy to have earned this certification.

Using Power Automate and Power BI

Power Automate helps me with my workflows. One example is receiving push notifications during evenings or weekends for VIP messages or important event-based alerts.

I also created this Power BI chart with the option to drill down into the numbers.
