SCCM: Install Wacom Bamboo tablet drivers unattended

Originally published Last updated

I have been a fan of using a tablet and pen for years. During Photoshop training, I realized it was time to put aside my mouse. I introduced the tablet at work, where several people now use one. I would not want to be without it, but every computer reinstall means loading the drivers again.

I worked out an unattended installation using Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 (SCCM). Most of my work is on Windows 7 Enterprise, 32-bit.

Extract the installation files

I downloaded cons525-5a_int.exe from the Wacom.eu website.

Run the installer on an admin workstation while logged on with a local administrator account. This extracts the installation files from the EXE. Open %TEMP% through Run, or go to %USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Temp. Look for a new folder with a name such as WZSE0.TMP. Copy it to another location, then go to the SCCM server.

Create the SCCM package

Create a package for the Wacom drivers using the files copied from the TEMP folder. Create a CMD file with this content:

Code5 lines
1
2
3
4
5
set CachePath=%~Dps0
%CachePath%setup.exe /s
"C:\Program Files\TabletPlugins\fbWTPUninstall.exe" /S
"C:\Program Files\TabletPlugins\ieUninstall.exe" /S
"C:\Program Files\TabletPlugins\npUninstall.exe" /S

I am not covering every step of creating an SCCM software deployment package here. Once the package is assigned to a collection, it should install the Wacom Bamboo tablet drivers silently in the background.

The additional script lines remove the Facebook and other plugins included with the installer. These should be excluded from an enterprise workstation deployment.

These steps can be used with any software deployment solution for unattended installation.
