SCVMM 2007: Error 421 when adding a host

I installed Windows Server 2008 x64 on a Dell PowerEdge 2900. The x64 installation lacked the storage driver, so I had to install Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise x86.

Once the server was running, I installed Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 Enterprise. I started Add Host from the SCVMM console, but the job failed because the server did not have WS-Management installed.

I had not installed WS-Management before and found the Hardware Management option in Add/Remove Windows Components.

I retried adding the host in SCVMM, but installation stopped with this message:

Error (421) Agent installation failed on hostname because of a WS-Management configuration error.

I rebooted a couple of times and reviewed the event log, but still could not install the Virtual Machine Manager 2007 agent.

A hotfix lets you install the WinRM component manually without using Control Panel. Download and install the hotfix.

This fixed my problem and the WinRM 10101 errors in the Application Event Log.
