Windows XP: Administrator account login failure
I keep running into this problem on workgroup clients because I forget to change the simple file sharing setting. Most of my enterprise clients are in a domain, but some use workgroups. Production and process-control networks commonly use a workgroup setup. Today, while testing a remote installation of Symantec Antivirus 10.2 server, I encountered this Administrator login problem.
At first, I thought the password was wrong. I tried again, then used computer\administrator, but still could not log in to the remote machine.
Logon failure: unknown name or bad password.
I returned to the Windows XP VM and opened Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / View. I cleared “Use simple file sharing (recommended)”.
I tried connecting to the ADMIN$ share again, and this time it worked.
