Ubuntu JeOS 7.10: VMware Tools installation error

Originally published Last updated 1 comment

Today I encountered my first problem while creating a new Ubuntu JeOS virtual appliance. After mounting and extracting VMware Tools, I ran ./vmware-install.pl and received this warning:

The following VMware kernel modules have been found on your system that were
not installed by the VMware Installer. Please remove them then run this
installer again.

vmnet
vmhgfs
vmblock
vmmon

Execution aborted.

I had not installed VMware Tools before, but these modules were somehow already included in ubuntu-7.10-jeos-i386.iso. Open the following directory and remove the listed module directories:

cd /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-virtual/ubuntu
ls
sudo rm -r vmnet/
sudo rm -r vmhgfs
sudo rm -r vmblock
sudo rm -r vmmon

Then rerun the installation script.

Hey this is great, I couldn't get my vmware to boot my XP from ubuntu and this seems to have worked, except my file path was /lib/modules/2.6.28-13-server/misc/

Then instead of reinstalling i ran sudo vmware-config.pl

almost done reconfigging and then we'll test her out.

    Thanks
