Windows Server 2003: Shadow Copy scheduled task failure

Originally published Last updated

I manage a couple of Windows file servers. Since our last folder migration, Shadow Copy had stopped running automatically. Before the migration, the server was both a domain controller and a file server. The domain controller role was removed, leaving it as a file server.

A user reported the problem after trying to restore a previous version of his file. I investigated the Previous Versions issue on the server.

While reviewing the event log, I found that the ShadowCopy job in Scheduled Tasks could not start:

"ShadowCopyVolume{bd7cbad7-8968-11d9-b621-001185e72ab6}.job" (vssadmin.exe) 3/30/2009 11:20:36 AM ** ERROR **  The attempt to retrieve account information for the specified task failed; therefore, the task did not run. Either an error occurred, or no account information existed for the task.  The specific error is:  0x8007000d: The data is invalid.

I deleted the failed job and created a new scheduled task named ShadowCopyG with the following command line:

Code1 line
1
c:\windows\system32\vssadmin.exe create shadow /autoretry=3 /for=G: c:\windows\system32

After I created the new job, Previous Versions copies started to appear again.
